For our media project we decided to create a post apocalyptic film based around a genetic mutation taking over the world: DNA-Pocalypse. When filming DNA-Pocalypse we took into consideration the conventions you generally see in a post apocalyptic film such as: desolation and and despair amongst the characters and added this into our own film. In the first 3 minutes of our film you see these conventions being portrayed through the glum and dull faces of our main characters, (Boris, Nicola and Jim). Furthermore, as we had to create a title sequence we inputted the titles aswell as showing some footage that links together and some that happens later on in the film to ensure we are showing the viewer different parts of the film.
The narrative to DNA-Pocalypse is set around 3 highchool friends trying to outlast the post apocalyptic spread of genetic mutations. However, they shut themselves in a cage, unknowing of what lies just around the corner. This narrative is significant to post apocalyptic films as most apocalyptic films focus around a group of survivors trying to outlast the apocalypse. An example of a film similar to ours would be 28 Days Later.
Throughout the first 3 minutes, the opening scene mainly features a post apocalyptic setting as we see the characters running frantically for cover and watching behind them to make sure they were safe from the genetic outburst. This is classicly portrayed for a post apocalyptic film. However, we decided to make the film our own by adding in non diagetic major key music to create tension for the viewer as they wonder what is going to happen to the characters. We matched this post apocalyptic genre through the editing as well as the sound. For example, near the end of our footage you see one of the genetic mutations running towards the cage and this is reinforced to the viewer through the fact that what the genetic mutation see's is distorted and dark.
Additionally, another major feature of our film is mise-en-scene. To make our film the most effective it could be we had to think about the positioning of the characters depending on what situation for this. An example where we have took mise-en-scene into consideration is at the start of our film the camera is level with the characters as they first enter the cage to show they are on top of the situation up until that point. However, once the characters shut themselves into the cage the camera is looking down on them when they are sat down to show they are in a vulnerable situation because they have nowhere to go.
Finally, after we had finished filming we had to put on the typography to contribute to the atmosphere of our film. When choosing the typography we decided to go with the hectic font as this looked fairly sinister and for the colour scheme we went with green and white as these two colours look really effective on the black background. So therefore the audience knows that the film has a serious topic through the bold and contrasting colour scheme.

Our media project (DNA-Pocalypse)
subverts typical stereotypes of how women, men and teenagers are presented. We
have chosen to subvert from typical stereotypes due to the fact that in post-apocalyptic
films, the characters tend to subvert their stereotypes by unifying into one
group to survive.
In our film we have 3 main characters
Boris, Jim and Nicola who are teenagers trying to outlast the apocalypse of
genetic mutations. These 3 teenagers subvert their stereotypical ideology as
teenagers are typically represented as irresponsible and reckless whereas our
group come together and hideout to try and survive like mature and responsible
adults. As a group we decided this was the best way to shoot our film with them
juxtaposing their stereotypes as we wanted the audience to understand the
seriousness of their situation and by acting responsibly the audience know
that, that is abnormal for teenagers to do typically. We supported our stereotypical
conventions through the variety of techniques used in our film. An example of
this would be when they are sat in the cage. As I was in charge of
cinematography I had chosen to set the camera to a high angled position looking
down at all of the characters and ensured that know character was higher than
the other as they were all equally vulnerable to the mutations that lie outside
the cage. In virtually all of our scenes as well our characters are always
positioned in close proximity to show that they are keeping close together to
survive rather than doing irresponsible teenage habits.
Additionally, teenagers are typically
represented as emotionless and fearless. However we juxtaposed this idea due to
the situation the main characters were in. We did this by shooting close ups of
our main characters face when they find out the government were responsible for
the genetic outburst, accompanied with sympathetic non-diegetic music. Here
this shows that the teenagers are worried as they haven't even got the
government to help them and the close ups show clearly their nerving emotions
on each of their faces.

Before making our
film we needed to decide who our target audience would be. The target audience
for our film would be people who are aged 15 and over due to the violence that
would occur throughout the film as DNA-Pocalypse is a post-apocalyptic film
outlasting mutations. Furthermore, as well as targeting age 15 and upwards, our
film would be aimed towards people who like independent films so that they have
an open mind when watching our film and because our film has an obscure genre,
it targets a niche audience. Generally, our film would be typically for men as
there would be a lot of gore and upsetting moments throughout the film.
We came up with the
target audience for our film through looking at similar post-apocalyptic films
such as 28 Days Later and Invasion of the Body Snatchers as these films are
rated 18 and 15 and these films target a niche audience. In addition, we
conducted a questionnaire to people in our area asking what age rating they
think our film should be due to the description and the trailer and what films
they watch in general. Overall, the majority stated that they thought our film
should be rated 15 due to the violence and distressing scenes and in most of
our questionnaire’s they stated that overall people generally watched comedies
or action based films therefore post-apocalyptic would be best for a niche
audience at an independent cinema as not a lot of people choose to watch
post-apocalyptic films.
After taking our
target audience questionnaires into consideration, we decided to make the film
according to the responses from the questionnaire. Firstly, we made sure to
include frantic non-diegetic music to create suspense for the viewer matched
with point of view shots to convey to the viewer what it would be like in the
characters’ shoes. Secondly, we included distressing scenes at the end when one
of our main characters (Boris), gets dragged away by a mutation and then he is
lying there dead on the floor. Finally, we included quite a few close ups of
our main characters to emphasise to the viewer what the characters are feeling
so our audience feels a connection with our characters.
