180 Degree Rule

180 Degree Rule

The 180 degree line rule is essential to maintaining continuity when creating a film. This is because if the 180 degree line rule is broken then the audience will become confused as one character will be in a position facing one way then if the 180 degree line rule is broken (so the camera switches to the opposite side of the previous shot) then the character will seem as though they are in a different place/position to the last shot. Many directors try to avoid this as it can take the audience out of the film and make them aware that they are actually watching a film.

However, some directors choose to do this on purpose for that very reason, to make the audience aware that they are watching a film. Again, these breaks in continuity were very popular during the French New Wave in order to challenge the ideas of conventional Western cinema. Here is an excellent video on the matter.
