180 degree rule- Nicole Collins French

Nicole Collins French
180 degree rule

The 180 degree line rule is essential when creating a film, especially when a conversation is taking place. This is because if the 180 degree line rule is broken then the audience will become confused as one character will be in a position facing one way then if the 180 degree line rule is broken (so the camera switches to the opposite side of the previous shot) then the character will seem as though they are in a different place/position to the last shot. The 180 degree line rule helps shot reverse shot to work perfectly, as if the rule is not broken then the shot reverse shot sequence will seem normal and that way the characters do not seem as though they are facing the same direction.

Shot reverse shot

Shot reverse shot is a film technique used to show a character looking at another character then the camera changes position and shows that the other character is looking back at the first character. If the 180 degree rule is not used properly then the two characters will seem to be facing the same way, causing confusion within the viewers, and prove a lack of continuity.

Match on action
Match on action is an editing technique. This technique allows the audience to follow a character's movement and not notice that the shot has changed, as the shot changes as the character does an action. For example if someone was to open a door then the shot would chnage as they make contact with the door or as the open the doo. That way the shot changes on a movement and the audeince will follow the movement being made and will not notice that the shot has changed.
